This is a picture of a seriously decayed crown. Decay of this structure will continue at an advanced rate until the bricks begin to become loose, which will continue to work it's way down the structure. Notice also this Chimney has no spark arrestor/ rain cap. So the interior of the structure is also getting moisture damage, not to mention that with no spark arrestor it is out of code per California code.
